The Saskatoon Blades used their import draft pick on defenceman Tomas Zizek Friday.
The Blades selected Zizka, a defenceman, with the 37th pick in Friday’s CHL import draft. His father, also named Tomas Zizka, is a long-time professional hockey player who suited up for 25 NHL games with the Los Angeles Kings in 2002-03 and 2003-04.
“ a really good-skating defenceman, and a guy that’ll be drafted next year to the NHL,” Priestner said Friday.Priestner says it’s too early to tell what kind of role Zizka will have on the team this coming season, though he noted that he has the luxury of bringing him along slowly given that the Blades have a strong nucleus of returning defencemen.
Saskatoon secured that 37th selection after trading Finnish forward Brad Lambert — a 2020 pick who has never played for the Blades — to Seattle last week for a bundle of draft picks.Zizka, a 2005-born defender, played this past season with Sweden’s Lidingo Vikings, where he collected 14 points and 16 penalty minutes in 31 games.“From all accounts, he’s a studious kid who’s interested in the game and getting better,” Priestner said. “He seems excited to come to Canada to play here.
“We’re really happy with the pick, and I think we’ve got a special group of 2005s — tons of really, really good players. It felt like it was the right age to add to, and be a help to us not only this year but in the future as well.”
