Black soloists take the lead in Gershwin's Porgy and Bess (Sponsored Post)
ON THURSDAY 7th July at the Barbican London Concert Choir and their conductor Mark Forkgen present a concert version of Gershwin’sThe leading roles will be taken by four outstanding black soloists. UK baritone Rodney Earl Clarke brings his wide experience of opera and musical theatre to the role of Porgy. Bess is sung by Nigerian-American soprano Francesca Chiejina, a soloist at the BBC Proms in 2021.Serena is performed by Gweneth Ann Rand, who sang the role with English National Opera.
Ronald Samm, who sings Sportin’ Life, has sung inAndrew Litton’s concert version includes all the best-loved songs – ‘Summertime’, ‘Oh I Got Plenty o’ Nuttin’, ‘Bess, You Is My Woman Now’ and ‘It Ain’t Necessarily So’, while London Concert Choir, Canticum chamber choir and a children’s choir take on the key role of the chorus.Southbank Sinfonia will open the concert with Gershwin’s overture to the hit musical, combining humour with traditional music such as the Shaker hymn ‘Simple Gifts’.
