BlackPanther star Danai Gurira defends the MCU's from Martin Scorsese's past criticisms. 'We have to come in and pour all we’ve got into this franchise. And that’s what we definitely, definitely do.'

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever star Danai Gurira defends the upcoming MCU film from director Martin Scorsese's past Marvel criticisms. Directed by Ryan Coogler, who is also responsible for the first Black Panther film, the sequel sees the nation of Wakanda grieving the death of Chadwick Boseman's King T'Challa while also attempting to deal with a new threat on the world stage.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY In a recent interview with GQ, Danai Gurira responds to Martin Scorsese's disparaging remarks about Marvel movies and defends Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. The star's respectful and thoughtful response highlights the fact that director Ryan Coogler and all the film's stars have put their all into creating an emotional and satisfying cinematic experience that explores weighty themes.

“Well, I’ve worked very closely with Ryan Coogler. My experience working under his helm, it’s definitely deeply cinematic in every way I can imagine. We’re not leaving anything at home. We’re bringing it all. We’re bringing our understanding of our culture, understanding of our humanity, of our gender, of the complexities therein of this world that we’re in, and all the specificities of this world. We have to come in and pour all we’ve got into this franchise.

Black Panther features all the action, humor, and CGI that one would expect from a Marvel movie but is operating on a deeper level due in large part to Michael B. Jordan's Erik Killmonger, the film's villain. Killmonger is widely considered one of the MCU's most empathetic antagonists, with the character ultimately driven to violence by his desire to see people of African descent around the world no longer being oppressed.

Criticism Is Subjective Although it's not hard to see where Scorsese is coming from and why other directors like Francis Ford Coppola have echoed similar sentiments, film criticism is always going to be subjective. While Scorsese doesn't believe that Marvel movies are real cinema, Gurira and other MCU movie actors like Elizabeth Olsen and Chris Evans evidently disagree, feeling like the artistry and passion involved in the productions makes them just as cinematic as any other movie.
