Local artist Adrian L. Burrell’s “Venus Blues,” on display at a Dogpatch gallery, is a powerful reckoning with the Transatlantic slave trade
Blues music originated in the 19th century Deep South, blending spirituals, work songs and African musical influences to create the sound of a people’s resistance to systemic oppression. Third-generation Oakland artist Adrian L. Burrell’s latest solo show, “Venus Blues,” employs a similar strategy in visual explorations of family narrative.
The artist himself was a victim of police violence in 2019, an experience that led him to question his sense of home and belonging in the United States. “The hardest thing I had to do was having children,” says the matriarch, who birthed 16 and outlived eight. In a sequence near the end of the film, footage of nude Black bodies and of a chain gang is projected on a stand of sugar cane, with audio of Civil Rights leader Fannie Lou Hamer playing over the scene.
