"I faced a lot of, I guess, judgement from teachers … Lynn Crawford-Carter really inspired me to be myself. When I was in her classroom, it was like total acceptance. You were valued, you were loved. You were treated with respect. She really believed in me."Building nursing diversity: Black nurse educators at two Nova Scotia universities important representation

Rosine Ouandji teaches Grade 12 chemistry on Wednesday at Centre Scolaire Étoile de L'Acadie. NICOLE SULLIVAN/CAPE BRETON POST - Nicole SullivanA graduate of Cape Breton University's bachelor of education program, Tobin had some Indigenous instructors but none that were Black. It wasn't until she started her master of education at St. Francis Xavier University in culturally responsive pedagogy, which she is currently doing, that she had other Black instructors.

Originally from Cameroon, Africa, the science educator knew she was moving to a small city but hadn't anticipated how small the Black community would be — especially the Black French community. Or how few Black students would be at the school. "It is good for them to see a Black teacher among the other teachers at the school because it is good for the environment of the school to have diversity of cultures. My presence here is also an advantage to a school has Black students," said Ouandji, whose first language is French.

"Kids need to see themselves. I didn't see myself in anything. There were no posters, there was no history in our books. What we did have was quite negative; cotton jins, slavery," said Rhodes, who grew up in New Glasgow and now lives in Port Hawkesbury.
