But you don’t have to be a doula—or even a woman—to support mothers. If nothing else, you just have to know what a new mother needs. Mark Krassner founded, an app with more than 250 meditations designed for motherhood. He founded it in 2015 as a tribute to his single mother, who suffered from postpartum depression. One of his first customers, Anna Gannon, first logged onto Expectful in 2015 after losing her job as a yoga instructor while six months pregnant.
She has since joined Expectful as an employee, where she works with licensed meditation guides, hypnotherapists and sound engineers to write meditations for every phase of motherhood, from conception to postpartum, as well as breastfeeding and returning to work. The company also partners with to offer free membership to Medicaid for low-income patients. “The app is very affordable, but for people who can’t afford it, we make sure it’s free,” says Krassner.
