Black and Latino New Yorkers have been hit with the vast majority of summonses for violating coronavirus social distancing rules, according to data released by the NYPD on Friday
The summonses given out represent a tiny percentage of NYPD's more than one million contacts with New Yorkers to spread awareness about the rules, police said.
The majority of the tickets, 206, were given out in Brooklyn. Another 99 were in the Bronx, while 41 were in Manhattan, and 28 in Queens. No tickets were issued on Staten Island.Police have broken up a number of large social gatherings that account for many of the summonses, police said. There were 17 such gatherings broken up, resulting in 163 of the summonses. Gatherings of any size are illegal under state and city orders to prevent the spread of Covid-19.
“The same communities that were failed when this pandemic started are the same communities that are now getting overpoliced,” he said Friday. “We see one community getting talked to, if anything at all, and another community getting punched in the face or thrown to the ground.”De Blasio said Friday he considers the disparities unacceptable, but stressed that summonses and arrests have been a last resort.
