You aren’t going to get away with skimming the surface if someone asks you to do a \u0027deep dive\u0027 into a specific subject
The word deep appears to have roots in the old European languages. Experts have found parallels between ancient words in Welsh, Gaelic, Dutch and Swedish with similar structures and definitions, all meaning some version of “at great depth.” It has also been synonymously used with words such as profound, mysterious and intense.
The word dive comes from Middle English, and its prevailing definition is pretty straightforward: to plunge yourself into some matter or activity. The most obvious visual is someone on a diving board at the pool. They’re not wading in cautiously; they’re throwing themselves in with abandon.Article content
It wasn’t until the 20th century that the two words were combined to give rise to the modern term we know now. Even when this new term emerged, its applications varied from deep-sea diving to journalism to business jargon.
