A trendy SoCal restaurant is taking its place.

"It's bittersweet to leave the Square," Cheese School owner Jeanine Egan said Wednesday."I'm completely heartbroken that we have to leave, but it's the right thing to do for us. It's the right thing to do for the communities that we support."

The decision to move was made to"conserve our resources," Egan explained. The rent for the massive Ghirardelli Square space was prohibitively expensive for the Cheese School, she said, andlandlord Jamestown was also seeking a tenant that could be open seven days a week. The Cheese School's cafe and cheese shop used to be open to the public every day, but with reduced foot traffic and a smaller team following the pandemic, they were only able to open on Fridays and Saturdays.

"To stay open on all of those days was really just a drain on our resources," Egan said."I needed to focus on what really brought in the most revenue for us, which was our classes and our events and our catering.", a trendy Southern California restaurant is moving in. Broad Street Oyster Company debuted as a raw seafood pop-up in Los Angeles in 2017 before opening its first brick-and-mortar in Malibu two years later.

As for The Cheese School, moving in with Daily Driver — the only cheese-making creamery in San Francisco — was a natural fit. The two companies are frequent collaborators, with Daily Driver even operating a bagel pop-up inside of The Cheese School last year. The cheese-making facility and wood-fired ovens at theThe Cheese School's Ghirardelli Square location will be turned over to a new seafood restaurant.
