The Carraway demolition is expected to be completed by mid-summer 2023.
On Dec. 6, 2022, Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin gives an update on the city's funding for the demolition of the former Carraway hospital site. The Star at Uptown master plan for developing the former Carraway hospital campus got an injection of funding Tuesday when the Birmingham City Council approved spending $3.7 million to help complete demolition of the former hospital.
Woodfin said he believed the total package of city assistance already pledged for the project would be “extremely sufficient” towards the total projected $346 million cost of the entire project. The amended agreement with Northside Redevelopment LLC set the city’s total funding of the project as not to exceed $12.35 million of the overall estimated cost of the $346 million development.
That includes a planned amphitheatre that will be managed by Live Nation, which currently manages the Oak Mountain Amphitheatre in Pelham. If Birmingham’s plans for funding the amphitheatre go through, Live Nation plans to shutter Oak Mountain Amphitheatre and begin booking concerts for the downtown Birmingham venue when it is completed.on the 50-acre campus of the former hospital where the amphitheatre would be.
