Senate candidate Blake Masters' political identity is closely intertwined with a pair of billionaires but his campaign has money problems.
Republican Senate hopeful Blake Masters is a surprising choice to have a money problem considering that his professional and political identity largely is tied up with a pair of billionaires.
Meanwhile, a PAC aligned with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., last week canceled millions in previously reserved spending in Arizona. That happened after the National Republican Senatorial Committee scaled back its budget in Arizona, too. "I don't think there's any Senate candidate who has raised more money per capita than Mark Kelly," she said.
Campaign finance reports show Masters had $1.6 million in cash as of mid-July near the end of a bruising five-way Republican primary. Kelly, who had no primary opponent, had nearly $25 million. Campaign finance records show he has given more than $400,000 in the current campaign cycle to different GOP contenders. This ranges from Arizona congressional candidate Juan Ciscomani in the Tucson area to Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., and Rep. Ted Budd, R-N.C., who is running for the Senate.
When Kelly took office in December 2020, it gave Democrats both Senate seats for the first time since the dawn of Sen. Barry Goldwater’s career in Washington after the 1952 elections. The most glaring source of significant financial help for Masters remains Thiel, who was Masters' professional mentor and who provided instant credibility to Masters' campaign last year with eye-popping support.Thiel provided money to help Masters' prospects through a PAC called Saving Arizona that has spent $12.4 million overall, records show. Thiel was by far the organization's most prolific donor.
