YARMOUTH, N.S. — Bigger and better is how this year’s 2024 Y-CON event in Yarmouth had been promoted and the change of venue to the Mariners Centre certainly helped to fulfill that promise.Y-CON, which was first held in Yarmouth in 2019, went with the change to the bigger Mariners Centre venue this year, after previously holding successful events at the Rodd Grand Hotel and Convention Centre.
Nick Doucet, one of the volunteer organizers of the event who also serves on the Y-CON board of directors shuffles some cards during one of the many gaming activities that was part of the weekend. TINA COMEAU Doucet said in previous years, and with other CON events, the vendors have been in different rooms and areas, making it feel more closed off.Doucet noted putting together a Y-CON event is a year-round process. There are monthly meetings and then more frequent meetings leading up to the event.While Doucet helps to organize the event, he is also a keen participant. Asked what it means to him to have an event like this in Yarmouth, he said it means a great deal.
There were many opportunities for gaming during the 2024 Y-CON Gaming and Comic Convention held in Yarmouth May 31-June 2. TINA COMEAU“I’ve been to Y-CON since it started up. It’s so delightful to see how it’s expanded and how many more people are interested,” said attendee Kody LeBlanc. “It’s growing a community in Yarmouth for geeky things, it’s very great.”
