With one lawsuit over an alleged racist act still pending, Big Sur’s Esalen Institute faces more allegations from within the organization.
On the heels of an ongoing lawsuit from a guest who alleged a racist incident took place last fall, the Esalen Institute, Big Sur’s famed wellness retreat, is now facing several more allegations of discrimination. This time, however, these claims are coming from within the organization.
on Sept. 27, the employee, who was granted anonymity in accordance with Hearst’s ethics policy, said the increased public scrutiny “caused the organization to take me seriously when I spoke up about my labor being exploited for months.” Prior to the story, the employee — who noted they’ve worked on and off at Esalen for almost 10 years and currently receive room and board along with their salary there — claims Esalen was, until recently, “knowingly exploiting my labor.
over the past two weeks in attempts to address these allegations individually. during a visit to the institute in April that Esalen goes “far and above any organization” when it comes to following state and federal civil rights and discrimination laws. In their initial email, the employee, who feared retaliation for speaking publicly, wrote that it was “infuriating to say the least reading that she was quoted saying how, when it comes to following state and federal civil rights and discrimination, the Esalen Institute goes ‘far and above any organization.
