The Junos will be in Halifax next spring. - CARAS / Ryan Boltonand their estimated $6.5-million economic impact, but the Junos are around the corner, promising even bigger bucks. And international musical legends.17 years ago. Back then, the likes of Coldplay and Michael Bublé walked the red carpet while Pamela Anderson hosted.
“I loved it from the time I came over the bridge, I’m like ‘Oh I love the ocean. I see this. I feel this.’” “It’s part of our DNA here to have a good time with music and culture. The economic impacts will be important for sure, as it was with the World Juniors, … but beyond that, it’s part of the city that becomes the heartbeat of the city and makes the city come alive.”Besides the big names, the Junos will bring in an estimated $8 million to $9 million in direct economic activity with 9,000 hotel room nights, 20,000 attendees and 6,000 out-of-town visitors, Savage said.
Juno Week is March 20 to 24, with the awards taking place at the Scotiabank Centre on March 24. But there will be at least 30 to 40 events leading up to the week, and there’s a post-week component as well, Mendoza said. The Junos like to leave a legacy in each city, which includes contributions to a music education charity which provides instruments for kids, he said.
“Those are things that are more difficult to measure but are real, tangible impacts for the creator community,” Mendoza said. “The fees for artists, for a live standpoint, go up when they’re nominated and then when they win a Juno as well.”Juno nominees will be announced at the end of January or early February next year during a press conference in Toronto. Mendoza can’t say what international acts will be here, but he has some ideas.
