YARMOUTH, NS – Imagine seeing a giant 28-foot canoe with 10 people in the boat, paddling up Lake Milo into Second Lake in Yarmouth the first week of ...
Pictured in the bow of the boat is John Nisbet, then in each seat going from front to back, left to right: Christianne Poulin, Darlene Ricker, Carolyn Campbell, Dusan Soudek, Dave Elliott, Rob Williams, Marilyn Manzer, Sandra Phinney and Wayne Gillis.
Last year, SWPA staged a two-day Big Boat leaders training session at the Argyler Lodge; eight members were certified to take people out on excursions. Participants in the public paddles ranged from age 3 to 78. These boats are also referred to as voyageur canoes because of their association with the Voyageurs, typically French Canadians, who transported trade goods and furs over routes spanning thousands of miles between the late 1600s and the mid-1850s.
Today, there are Big Boat enthusiasts across the country who enjoy taking multi-day trips together, called brigades. Jillian Comeau, community engagement officer with Yarmouth Recreation, is enthusiastic about the public paddles coming up. This winter, SWPA is also mounting a major project to build a 26-foot big boat, led by master canoe-builder Wayne Doucette.
