Opinion: Biden’s deplorable OK of cluster bombs
It’s concerning because Biden said he made the decision because Ukraine is running low on ammunition, and so is the U.S.
It’s concerning also because cluster munitions present a long-term danger to civilians and for that reason are banned by more than 120 countries. Cluster munitions scatter “bomblets” over the landscape that months or even years later can blow up innocent people, often children, who stumble upon them.
Zelensky, speaking through a translator at a news conference at the NATO summit in Vilnius, Lithuania, pledged to used the cluster munitions only against military targets. “It’s not going to be used anywhere else,” he said. But we only have his word on that.
