ICYMI - Biden more popular in Canada than Trudeau, poll says, ahead of U.S. president's first visit

Canadians have an unavoidable interest in the United States, a country with almost 10 times Canada’s population and a dominant influence in world affairs. Americans, on the other hand, don’t tend to think much about Canada, but when they do, it tends to be positive.

A breakdown of that sentiment shows geographic division in Canada, but fair uniformity in the United States. Those who voted Democrat for Biden were more positive than those who voted Republican for Donald Trump, at 97 per cent versus 85 per cent. Respondents in both countries were asked who their country’s strongest ally is. They could choose from a list that included each other, as well as the United Kingdom, France, Germany and Mexico.

Asked if they would ever consider moving to Canada, 40 per cent of Americans said yes, and 42 per cent said no. When Canadians were asked if they would consider moving the other direction, only 27 per cent said yes and 65 per cent said no. About half in both countries were satisfied with the status quo: 51 per cent of Canadians and 48 per cent of Americans. Advocates of a more open border were 25 per cent of Canadians and 26 per cent of Americans. Wanting tighter control were 15 per cent of Canadians and 11 per cent of Americans.

“I think these immigration numbers will catch a lot of people by surprise,” said Enns. “I think Canadians have this perspective that we are far more generous when it comes to immigration than is the case in America.” More Americans than Canadians said it was favourable, at 25 per cent compared to 16 per cent. More Canadians than Americans said it was unfavourable, at 14 per cent to seven per cent. The rest said it was neutral or didn’t know.Article content
