President Biden formally introduced Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson as his pick to replace retiring Justice Stephen Breyer on the U.S. Supreme Court — fulfilling his promise of appointing a Black woman to the nation’s highest court.

“Today I’m pleased to introduce to the American people a candidate who continues in this great tradition,” the president said. Jackson told Biden she was “truly humbled” by her nomination, and called it “an extraordinary honor.”“Among my many blessings and, indeed, the very first, is the fact that I was born in this great country,” Jackson said. “The United States of America is the greatest beacon of hope and democracy the world has ever known.”
And she thanked Breyer, for whom she worked as a law clerk during the Supreme Court's 1999-2000 term.
