The Biden administration is moving to restore protections for endangered animals and plants that were loosened under former President Donald Trump, which had triggered lawsuits from environmental groups

The Biden administration is moving to restore protections for endangered animals and plants thatunder former President Donald Trump, which had triggered lawsuits from environmental groups.

In an announcement on Friday, U.S. Fish and Wildlife officials said they plan to strengthen rules that protect threatened species, including the restoration of an earlier process for designating critical habitat. The new rules are expected to take several months to draft and implement. Under the Trump administration, wildlife regulators in 2019 weakened protections under the 1973 Endangered Species Act, which extends protections to more than 1,600 plants and animals.

That move came after complaints from developers and other business interests who said portions of the law had become too onerous. Trade groups representing a broad portion of the U.S. business community—including power-plant owners, manufacturers, developers and pipeline companies—had pushed for an overhaul.

Environmental and animal protection groups, including the Sierra Club and Natural Resources Defense Council, sued over the changes, saying they both violated Congress’s intent and that regulators who implemented the new rules didn’t follow the proper procedures.
