The Biden administration suspended all oil and gas leases in Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge that former President Donald Trump opened to drilling for the first time.
The Interior Department said it “identified defects in the underlying record of decision supporting the leases, including the lack of analysis of a reasonable range of alternatives” required under the National Environmental Policy Act. Major U.S. banks said they would not finance oil and gas exploration in this section of Alaska, which would require extensive infrastructure for the drillers to succeed.
The Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday that the Interior Department, which oversees the program and the refuge, will start a deeper analysis of the environmental impacts of drilling in the area.
