Bianca Andreescu became the first Canadian ever to win a major title when she beat Serena Williams in the U.S. Open final. Williams remains stuck on 23, one behind Margaret Court's all-time mark of 24.
Showing no fear on the biggest of stages, Andreescu broke Serena in the first game of the match when Williams double-faulted on break point. Andreescu quickly consolidated for a quick 2-0 lead. Williams struggled with her own serve early and with Andreescu's concussive power from the baseline.
Bianca Andreescu became the first Canadian man or woman to win a Grand Slam title when she beat Serena Williams in the U.S. Open final on Satuday. Andreescu got herself a set point with a massive crosscourt forehand winner and then took the first set 6-3 when Serena double-faulted on set point. Williams broke Andreescu back, but the Canadian broke again for a 3-1 lead when Serena hit a forehand wide. Andreescu broke again for a 5-1 lead and then had a championship point on her serve but could not convert the first one. Williams won four straight games as the crowd noise reached a fever pitch before Andreescu steadied her nerves and held for a 6-5 lead.
