The twins from General Motors are the last trucks standing in the half-ton diesel wars, with Ford dropping its PowerStroke from the F-150 ages ago and Ram ushering its EcoDiesel out the door for. Chevy Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 soldier on with their 3.0L inline-six Duramax diesel, which could turn out to be a sensible decision since they are now the only game in town with half-ton trucks whose city/highway combined fuel economy rating is better than 10.0 L/100 km.
The 9.2 L/100 km figure is for two-wheel drive trucks, a configuration which is approximately as common as honesty in Ottawa. Appending 4×4 gubbins jacks the rate to 9.8 L/100 km – still impressive and in fact still better than a two-wheel drive F-150 Hybrid. For this model year, the GM Duramax has been cranked to a healthy 305 horsepower and 495 lb-ft of torque, marked increases for the 3.0L inline-six. That cylinder configuration results in buttery smooth power delivery.
This author will note his personal experience with multiple examples which had over 20,000 km on their odometers revealed these engines get much louder over time, going from an idling-in-the-next room quell when near-new to a typical diesel clatter as they age. However, sensible pedaling of the accelerator – but no hypermiling shenanigans – can easily return fuel economy that handily beats the government’s official numbers.
