A century ago, on March 27, 1924, the West Berkeley Improvement Club announced that at least 2,040 signatures had been obtained on petitions for an initiative to stop the city from filling the Berkeley waterfront with garbage. The petitioners wanted the city to keep using an incinerator instead of dumping the garbage into San Francisco Bay.

“It was stated that their conduct in many cases has been unmanly. It was also reported that a number of the new street lights had been broken by miscreants.”Berkeley’s plague of attacks by dogs suspected of having rabies continued on March 28, 1924. The next day, March 29, Berkeley police announced that one rabid dog had died at the Berkeley pound and that “all dogs, even licensed animals, will be shot if found wandering around without leashes or in automobiles with their owners.

The Shattuck Building still stands. Revival Bar + Kitchen now operates at the building’s southwest corner, where the hardware store was.
