Actor Benedict Cumberbatch shares a harrowing story of being robbed and abducted at gunpoint in South Africa, revealing how the traumatic experience shaped his outlook on life and his approach to acting.

Benedict Cumberbatch, known for portraying the superhero Doctor Strange , recently revealed a harrowing experience from his past. In 2004, while filming the BBC miniseries 'To the Ends of the Earth' in South Africa, Cumberbatch and his friends were robbed and abducted by six men after their tire blew out on a remote road. Bound and forced to sit execution-style, the actors were left fearing for their lives before the attackers finally fled.

Cumberbatch described the ordeal as a 'sense of time, but not necessarily a good one,' admitting it fueled his desire to live a life less ordinary. The near-death experience, he explained, prompted him to engage in adrenaline-pumping activities, like skydiving and taking risks. 'It made me go, 'Oh, right, yeah, I could die at any moment,' he confessed. However, he acknowledged that his perspective has shifted since becoming a father to three sons. 'Now that's changed, and that sobers you,' he admitted, recognizing the responsibility that comes with family. The actor reflected on how the traumatic experience made him 'comfortable with what lies beneath it,' accepting the inevitability of death. Cumberbatch also addressed his Marvel Cinematic Universe colleague Tom Holland's claim that he taught him how to cry on command. While acknowledging the 'method' that involves breathing techniques and muscle manipulation, Cumberbatch cautioned against forcing emotions. 'You have to really put your mind somewhere so you can respond to the moment,' he elaborated, emphasizing the importance of drawing from personal experiences or imagination. 'I've lived a bit of life,' the 48-year-old actor said, 'I've experienced loss, I've experienced pain, I've experienced some of the very worst, as well as the best.
