Ben Wallace has landed a killer blow to Rishi Sunak’s bid to become PM by backing Liz Truss

The defence secretary, an influential figure in Tory ranks, also criticised the former Chancellor over his defence spending

Just weeks later he has landed an extremely damaging blow on his former Cabinet colleague’s campaign. In a series of interviews on Friday morning, the Defence Secretary said he had chosen to support Ms Truss because he trusted her to understand the threats the UK faces and that that these need to be “funded properly”.

Ms Truss has said she would increase defence spending to 3% of GDP by 2030. Mr Sunak has refused to commit to what he has described as “arbitrary” targets but said he would do what it takes to keep the country safe.
