Canucks’ rookie sensation has shown bark and bite in remarkable season
The Calder Memorial Trophy front-runner has dazzled with eye-popping offensive wizardry and diligent three-zone defensive awareness. Establishing the Vancouver Canucks’ rookie scoring record Monday by surpassing the 60-point seasons of Pavel Bure and Ivan Hlinka has obviously overshadowed what occurs when the Swedish sensation misses a shot, pass or check.
Pettersson recently went four games without a point — just the second time he’s been held off the scoresheet in that span — and it looked like everything had caught up to him. But he did amass 69 games last season between being the Swedish Hockey League MVP and playing for his country in the world junior and world championship events.
“The puck was going my way and I was creating chances. I just have to do that every game because losing sucks, to be honest. As for the franchise rookie record, Pettersson kept it in perspective but knows the significance. Those who questioned his transition to the North American ice surface and game quickly learned he didn’t transition at all. He’s playing the same way he did last season in racking up 56 points in 44 games and 19 in 13 post-season games to lead Vaxjo HC Lakers to the SHL league title.“It’s a really cool feeling,” he said.
“It’s hard to talk about those guys because they’re on such a different level with their mindset. He’s not the most vocal kid and there are times when I’d like him to speak to me down low, because he might get frustrated with me if I don’t get him the puck.
