Ben Docktor remembered as 'first-class' Race City creator, builder of Calgary motorsports scene yyc
His vision to set in motion the creation of Race City has left an undeniable mark on the area’s motorsport scene, which is why he’ll long be remembered as the guy in the driver’s seat around here.“Ben was a very energetic man and passionate about his sport,” said race enthusiast Gary Leadbetter. “And obviously passionate about his business, as well, because it was successful enough to enable him to afford him to build a race track, which is not inexpensive to build.
“He was a great guy,” Browne said. “He was always on your side. Everything was first class with him.”“The thing that really set Race City apart was that he decided to make it an all-purpose motorsport venue,” said former Race City reporter/employee Robert Rooney. “Because he built an excellent short track for oval racing and, then, he built a really high-end drag strip and then expanded that drag strip into a road course.
“This was a guy who had a vision and actually made the vision happen. When it matured, he’d created what was billing itself as Canada’s finest motorsport facility — and that was not a word of a lie.” “He was a straight-shooter, for sure,” said Terry Andresen, who worked the business side of Docktor’s affairs for 38 years. “Ben was a generous man but didn’t show it on the front-end. He was a hard business guy, and he certainly wanted to do a lot of things for the city and liked the fact that he was bringing a world-class facility and racing to Calgary — not only so he could participate but so the people of Calgary could have someplace to go to enjoy the motorsport racing.
