Perry, a beloved character and model for animators, died Thursday at the age of 30. His death was announced by Barron Park Donkey s in Palo Alto , California, where Perry once served as a model. Perry had suffered from a hoof disease called laminitis, which caused extreme pain to his left hind leg. Months of treatment, including acupuncture, massages, laser light therapy and medication, did not alleviate Perry’s pain, and he had to be euthanized.
After his death, Perry was left in the pasture for several hours so his donkey friends, April and Buddy, could process their loss. The city of Palo Alto spent $25,000 annually on the care of the three donkeys, with an additional $15,000 in 2024 due to Perry’s medical bills. Perry became a local celebrity when a team of animators from Pacific Data Images, hired to work on “Shrek,” visited Barron Park in 1999 for research. Perry reportedly earned $75 for his time
