ICYMI: 'Belly of the shadow of death': Belgian hikers recount 7-hour trek in Jasper snowstorm

We just thought that it’s gonna maybe snow for a couple of hours and by the morning it will all be gone.Van Eeghem said they didn’t have any mobile connection and couldn’t check the weather or call for help. They worried their food supply would last just one more night and, fearing they may be snowed in for days, they made the decision to head back down the mountain the next day.

Van Eeghem said the trail was barely visible, with snow-laden trees littering the route. Signage during the descent was almost impossible to find. Officials later said that some 55 centimetres of snow fell in parts of the national park, not to mention 100 millimetres of rain, prompting road closures and resulting in the rescue of some 60 visitors.Eventually, the men claimed victory over the storm, and were back at the safety of their vehicle. They piled their wet gear in and took off for town to rest and change before catching their flight out of Canada, now heading off to snow-free San Fransisco.
