The telecom giants sent a letter concerning a deal to sell a 20 per cent stake in sports holding company Kilmer Sports Inc. to OMERS for $400 million.
As Rogers and Bell reportedly try to block Larry Tanenbaum’s deal to sell part of his stake in Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment, the NBA says it’s keeping a close eye on the situation, and a former MLSE executive says the NHL is likely keeping tabs on the dispute as well.
MLSE owns the NHL’s Toronto Maple Leafs, the NBA’s Toronto Raptors, MLS’s Toronto FC and the CFL’s Toronto Argonauts. Bell and Rogers each own 37.5 per cent of MLSE, and had the right to buy Kilmer Sports’ 25 per cent stake.NBA spokesperson Mike Bass said the league is keeping an eye on the situation, after already giving the deal a thumbs up last month.Bass said in an email Thursday.
But former MLSE CEO and president Richard Peddie said the NHL and MLS are also likely keeping an eye on the unusual situation. “Larry has a lot of support from the commissioners,” he said. “He’s the chair of the NBA board, and he’s built up a very good relationship with Gary Bettman over the years.”
