When the occupation of Kherson began, Vera started evacuating people out of the region with the help of a few other volunteer drivers. They often pretended that their evacuees were disabled or ill. Vera tries to keep her team disciplined. She personally arranges passage with Russian soldiers and expects her drivers to keep quiet and follow her directions. Mistakes can easily lead to disaster. This new soldier demanded that their cargo be thoroughly searched. When the opiates were discovered, he said that he would throw Vera in jail unless she handed over all of the aid to him — not just the opiates, but everything they had. Vera acquiesced, but one of her drivers, another inexperienced man, got angry at the blatant theft and began to argue.
