Composite illustration featuring former fixer and lawyer Michael Cohen, left, and former U.S. president Donald Trump.

During his first day of testimony at Donald Trump's criminal trial in New York, Michael Cohen walked prosecutors through his decade of service as Trump's legal Mr. Fix It — a solver of problems often tangentially related to his professional title as lawyer.Michael Cohen, left, the former lawyer for Donald Trump, is shown in this composite illustration with the former U.S. president. Cohen is testifying at Trump's criminal trial in New York on Monday.

Michael Cohen walked prosecutors through his decade of service as Trump's legal Mr. Fix It — a solver of problems often tangentially related to his professional title as lawyer. Cohen is shown leaving his apartment building on his way to the criminal courthouse in New York City on Monday morning. Cohen testified for the prosecution at Trump's trial over charges that he falsified business records to conceal money paid to silence porn star Stormy Daniels in 2016.

Trump and Cohen barely acknowledged each other in the courtroom. It was a rare encounter between two allies who once spoke multiple times a day. He told court that Trump decided to run years in advance of 2016 but took a pass on the previous race, in part because his contract had been renewed for the reality TV show. He recalled Trump saying at the time: "You don't leave Hollywood. Hollywood leaves you."
