Review: Ali Wong and Steven Yeun cross paths and combust in 'Beef,' the absorbing Netflix series created by Lee Sung Jin

With irrational anger so in vogue, the time seems ripe for “Beef”—as in gripe, or grievance, though neither does justice to the reckless ferocity of the antics in this nerve-jangling, black-edged comedy. Comedy may be overstating things, actually: The series, created by Lee Sung Jin , makes the venting of spleen look ridiculous. But that doesn’t mean it isn’t dangerous.

Or recognizable. The principals in this very absorbing 10-episode series—struggling contractor Danny Cho and au courant L.A. botanical designer Amy Lau —cultivate their flaws and blow their tops in ways that will make them familiar, even to those of us who would never let a road-rage incident evolve into the bilious equivalent of a 20-car pileup.
