Beaumont Innovation Park to Attract Health Sciences and Tech Investment

Beaumont's new innovation park aims to attract health sciences, technology, and safety sector investment, with provincial funding for infrastructure at a proposed safety campus.

An Edmonton -area bedroom community is hoping a new innovation park will spur economic development. The mayor of the City of Beaumont, located just south of Edmonton east of Highway 2, says the park is expected to attract investment from the health sciences, technology and safety sectors, while creating long-term economic opportunities for the city and region.

Mayor Lisa Vanderkwaak said the park will open up opportunities for jobs and further investment. She believes it will have a spin-off effect, drawing other investors and complementary businesses and organizations to the area.

Provincial Funding for Safety Campus

The province announced it will invest $38.5 million over three years in a proposed safety campus for the Alberta Motor Transport Association. The funding will cover the construction of roads, underground infrastructure and utilities on the 160-acre site in Beaumont's southeast corner, south of Highway 625 between Highway 814 and Range Road 241.

The proposed safety campus would provide specialized training for commercial transportation workers and law enforcement. It is being positioned as the innovation park's anchor tenant. A construction start date has not yet been set.

The announcement was made Friday during a media availability outside city hall. Mayor Vanderkwaak spoke about the potential for the project to transform the local economy.

Diversifying Beaumont's Tax Base

Beaumont council has been working to diversify the city's tax base, which remains largely residential. The innovation park is seen as a key step toward attracting commercial and industrial development.

The park's focus on health sciences, technology and safety sectors aligns with broader regional economic trends. The safety campus, as the anchor tenant, is expected to draw other businesses and organizations in related fields.

Economic Impact and Future Outlook

The $38.5 million provincial investment over three years will fund critical infrastructure on the 160-acre site. This infrastructure is essential for the development of the safety campus and future tenants of the innovation park.

Mayor Vanderkwaak expressed optimism about the spin-off effects, noting that complementary businesses and organizations will want to come alongside once the project gains momentum. She emphasized that it will open up opportunities for jobs and investment.

The innovation park is located in Beaumont's southeast corner, south of Highway 625 between Highway 814 and Range Road 241. Its proximity to Edmonton and Highway 2 makes it an attractive location for businesses in the health sciences, technology and safety sectors.

While a construction start date has not been set, the announcement marks a significant step forward for the project. The city continues to work on diversifying its tax base, and the innovation park is a central part of that effort.

The safety campus for the Alberta Motor Transport Association will provide specialized training for commercial transportation workers and law enforcement. This aligns with the park's broader goal of attracting investment and creating long-term economic opportunities.
