Brooklyn’s coaches acknowledge using the word as a play call, apologized and agreed to change it when the teams returned for the second half, Hardis said.

Brooklyn’s superintendent, Theodore Caleris, said the district is investigating the incident and plan to release further information. Brooklyn’s head coach is Tim McFarland, who was praised last year by the district for being an excellent coach and role model. Beachwood officials said Brooklyn school officials have been responsive and apologetic.

Parents of Beachwood students are demanding disciplinary action against Brooklyn’s coaches and players. “There is no place for this type of ignorance and hatred in high school sports,” the parent said. “And in my opinion, there should be repercussions for this behavior. Our children deserve to feel safe participating in extracurricular activities with other school districts.”“There is no place for this sort of behavior, and we invite Brooklyn’s city leaders to join us in condemning it,” according to a statement from Mayor Justin Berns and city council.
