BC Transit’s first electric vehicles in the province are finally set to hit the road in Victoria in early 2025.

$395.5 million for BC Transit to buy 115 electric busesNow, BC Transit says it plans to add a total of 141 electric buses – including 125 heavy duty buses, 10 double decker buses, and six light duty buses – with the first 10 heavy duty buses expected to arrive in the Victoria Regional Transit System early next year.

In addition to the electric buses, BC Transit is looking to buy 80 diesel double decker buses “to fill immediate transit needs in the Victoria Regional Transit system,” said the organization in a release Monday.Double-deckers parked for maintenance in Victoria leads to ‘intermittent challenges’ in service: BC Transit

BC Transit says it also plans to purchase 105 hybrid heavy duty buses, which will lower emissions, use less fuel, and make less noise on city streets compared to its current buses. Over the next three to five years, BC Transit says it plans to buy more than 900 new buses, with an eye towards having those vehicles minimize greenhouse gas emissions.

Of the 902 buses on the docket, 590 are slated to replace existing, aging buses, while BC Transit hopes to add 312 net-new buses from now until 2029, “as service expansion needs are identified and approved.”That plan fell through, however, after the original manufacturer, Proterra Operating Company Inc.,BC Transit now has a contract for 125 heavy duty electric buses with two manufacturers, New Flyer and Nova Bus.
