BC Hydro has opened an EV fast-charging site in Esquimalt with three 180-kilowatt chargers serving up to six vehicles, part of a plan for 3,500 ports by 2035.

BC Hydro has opened a new electric vehicle fast-charging site in Esquimalt, giving drivers a place to power up that can serve up to six vehicles at once. The station is located at the Archie Browning Sports Centre on Esquimalt Road and features three 180-kilowatt chargers.

The site uses power sharing technology, allowing each charger to serve two vehicles at the same time. When both are plugged in, the available power is divided between them.

The chargers offer CCS, CHAdeMO and NACS connections. The cost is 39.69 cents per kilowatt hour before tax, and an idle fee of 40 cents per minute begins five minutes after a vehicle stops charging.

BC Hydro Expands EV Charging Network

The Esquimalt station is part of BC Hydro's broader plan to expand public EV charging as more British Columbians switch to electric vehicles. The utility says it plans to have 3,500 EV charging ports across B.C. by 2035 and is looking for more places to put them.

BC Hydro says it considers several factors when deciding where to build new sites. These include EV use, demand at existing stations, proximity to major travel routes, available electricity and the potential for future expansion.

The utility's goal is to build a network that keeps pace with growing adoption of electric vehicles across the province. As more drivers make the switch, public charging infrastructure is seen as a key part of supporting that transition.

How Property Owners Can Host a Charging Site

Property owners can propose locations for a BC Hydro charging site. Proposed sites must generally be publicly accessible and have enough space for multiple EV charging stalls.

Other factors include safety and accessibility. For urban locations, BC Hydro says it generally looks for space for at least eight charging stalls, although alternate configurations can be considered.

The utility says hosting a charging site can bring more visitors to a property while adding another stop to B.C.'s growing public EV charging network.

The Esquimalt site adds to that network and offers local drivers a new option for fast charging. With three chargers and power sharing, the station is designed to serve multiple vehicles efficiently at a busy community location.
