BC Ferries is getting rid of its Ferry Advisory Committees – which are used to communicate with smaller coastal communities – and is replacing them with a new engagement model that will be developed next year.

The move comes about a year after a tense meeting took place between the FACs and BC Ferries in Gibsons. The Sept. 20, 2023 meeting reached a boiling point and one local in attendance In-person FAC meetings were then suspended, and the British Columbia Ferry Commission developed a report into how to improve engagement between BC Ferries and ferry-dependent communities.

BC Ferries says a survey completed by nearly 5,000 customers in August found that 81 per cent of respondents preferred getting their information digitally – such as through email, social media, or the BC Ferries website – while only eight per cent preferred the current model. “Our goal with this new model will be to enable and amplify a diverse range of voices to better ensure the people who live in and represent the communities we serve can play an active role in helping inform decisions about the services they receive,” said Pinto.

Meanwhile, Pinto says that BC Ferries is grateful for the work that FAC members have done over the past three decades.
