Two BC Ferries sailings between Nanaimo and Vancouver were canceled after a passenger reportedly went overboard. Emergency services responded and the passenger was rescued.

BC Ferries reported that two sailings between Nanaimo (Duke Point) and Vancouver ( Tsawwassen ) were canceled Wednesday after a passenger reportedly went overboard as their ship arrived at the Tsawwassen ferry terminal. Around 7:45 a.m., crews received a report of a “ passenger overboard ” while the vessel neared the ferry terminal, according to BC Ferries.

The person was retrieved from the water and brought to shore, where they received care from BC Emergency Health Services, the ferry operator says. The incident caused two sailing cancellations, the 10:15 a.m. departing from Tsawwassen and the 12:45 p.m. departing Duke Point. “Other sailings on this route are expected to proceed as scheduled, starting with the 12:45 p.m. departure from Tsawwassen,” said BC Ferries in a service notice Wednesday.Passengers who had a booking on one of the canceled sailings will be contacted by the BC Ferries Customer Service Centre with an update on if they can be fit on an alternate sailing, or if their bookings will be canceled or refunded. BC Ferries is also issuing a reminder that alternate service is available through the Departure Bay (Nanaimo) – Horseshoe Bay (Vancouver) route
