Bayou Bend's longtime director retiring after decades of bringing Houstonians to MFAH's house museum
Those figures piqued Marzio's interest. What Campbell's resume lacked in doctorate degrees, she compensated in spades with historic preservation and project management experience. At the time she was hired, the home designed by renowned architect John Staub in 1928 for philanthropist Ima Hogg and her brothers was even more of a hidden gem. The 14-acre home, one of the first in the newly formed River Oaks neighborhood, houses 4,700 objects across 28 period-room settings.
When Campbell was hired, roughly 40,000 people visited Bayou Bend annually. There was no sign to mark the site, so the first thing she suggested to Marzio was installing a banner. That helped. Then Campbell recommended they build a visitor and educational center to add a little physical presence to the corner of Memorial and Westcott in what was previously an empty parking lot. That's when passersby began to realize there must be something going on down the hill and across the bridge.
Today the collection is on display in one of the public's favorite spaces: the dining room. It's swathed in gilded gold, hand-painted wall coverings that Hogg had designed in the 1920s. "We have a very large collection of Texas pottery on view. I don't know of one that's larger, made by African-Americans as part of the Reconstruction who started their businesses," Campbell said.
