Bay Area public officials and abortion rights advocates marked the 51st anniversary of the now-overturned Roe v. Wade by gathering this week in San Francisco and reaffirming their commitment to protecting and expanding the region’s access to women’s reproductive health care . In January 1973, the U.S. Supreme Court recognized a woman’s constitutional right to make the deeply personal decision to have an abortion free from interference of politicians.
But in June 2022, the high court voted to overturn Roe v. Wade and took away that constitutional right. Now, tens of millions of women live in states with extreme and dangerous abortion bans. According to The New York Times, 21 states now ban abortion or restrict the procedure earlier in pregnancy than the standard set by Roe v. Wade.
