A military flight instructor stationed at Travis Air Force Base was in the right place at the right time for one Yosemite hiker in need of an urgent rescue.

The ordeal began in overcast, gusty conditions atop Half Dome on Sept. 2. Among the hikers braving the elements was 60th Air Evacuation Squadron flight instructor Capt. Joshua Haveman, who was on the last stretch of his summit attempt. “I knew people were going to be in trouble as soon as I topped the hill because it was cold and windy, and people were getting desperate trying to come down holding a slick metal cable on slick granite.

Haveman jumped into action, calling park rangers for help, crossing over the cable barriers and gathering sticks as he went to splint the injured climber’s leg. Using his military training, Haveman administered first aid to the hiker until search-and-rescue rangers arrived. They were able to stabilize the man and await a helicopter to safety.
