From the amazing Rhonda Benin, to a Children’s Hospital fundraiser starring Alanis Morissette and Oakland’s Leila Mottley, there is a lot to see this weekend.
If, as the Washington Post describes it, Patricia Williams’ stand-up comedy is “unforgiving” well, she’s earned that right. She endured a brutal youth in Atlanta full of drugs, crime and abuse. She had given birth to two children by the time she was 15, which was around the same time she started dealing crack.
In “The Ms. Pat Show,” Williams portrays what she has described as a “modern-day Archie Bunker,” a sharp-tongued, short-tempered mom and housewife who seems somewhat at odds with the changing times but possessing, deep down, a heart of gold. That’s the title of Saturday’s concert by Symphony San Jose and the Symphony San Jose Chorale, joining forces for a program on themes of poetry and nature. It includes music by Debussy, Holst, and Vaughan Williams, as well as contemporary works by Jake Runestad and Tariq O’Regan.“Mahler’s Inner Circle”:
Led by pianist/composer Renee Rosnes, who was a founding member of the SFJAZZ Collective and longtime collaborator with Bay Area vibes legend Bobby Hutcherson, Artemis’ concert offers a preview of the band’s second album “In Real Time,” which Blue Note releases on May 5. The first album featured reed star Anat Cohen and vocalist extraordinaire Cécile McLorin Salvant, but the revamped lineup made a powerful impression last summer with one of the best sets at the Monterey Jazz Festival.
