Canadian rugby star Kayla Bauder has been ruled out of the upcoming HSBC Sevens World Series stop in Perth due to injury. The Canadian women's team prepares for the tournament despite the setback, aiming to improve on their seventh-place standing in the overall series.
Rugby Canada declined to provide further details regarding the nature of the injury sustained by player Kayla Bauder . Bauder, hailing from North Vancouver, contributed significantly to UBC's victory in the U- Sports women's rugby championship, securing an 8-3 triumph over the Victoria Vikes in Charlottetown earlier this month.
The Canadian women's team is set to commence their Pool B campaign in the HSBC Sevens World Series on Thursday night against Britain, followed by matches against Fiji on Friday and the United States on Saturday. These matches will be held at HBF Park in Perth, Australia.Despite the absence of Bauder, Canada coach Jocelyn Barrieau has traveled with a full squad of 14 players to Perth, ensuring they can field a complete team for all matches. Canada's current standing in the overall series is seventh, after placing eighth in the season-opening tournament in Dubai and fifth in Cape Town. Their performance in Dubai saw a 1-4-0 record, while they achieved a 3-1-0 record in Cape Town. Following the Perth leg, the teams will proceed to Vancouver for the fourth stop of the season from February 21-23 at B.C. Place Stadium. The circuit will then travel to Hong Kong and Singapore before concluding in Carson, California, from May 3-4. The Singapore event will determine the season winners of the SVNS, after which the top eight men's and women's teams will compete in the winner-takes-all world championship at Dignity Health Sports Park in California.New Zealand currently dominates the women's standings, securing victories in both Cape Town and Dubai, where they finished as runners-up to Australia. Australia, who placed fourth in Cape Town, holds the second position, followed by France, who secured third place in both events. The Olympic silver medalist Canadian women finished fifth in the standings last season before losing to New Zealand in June in Madrid in the third-place game. Australia ultimately won the women's title, defeating France 26-7. Canada's men's team was relegated from the circuit in June after losing to Spain in the relegation decider in Madrid. They are now aiming to regain their spot in the top tier of sevens rugby through World Rugby's second-tier Challenger Series
