Has Batman finally become too old for the cowl?
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT For decades Batman has appeared to be an almost ageless figure: a mortal hero who operates at peak human capacity in every way. After some recent defeats, however, DC may be starting to change this status quo. Bruce Wayne, it appears, is finally starting to feel his age — and his fellow heroes can tell.
Batman, like most of the Justice League, is recovering from the nightmarish events of DC's Knight Terrors event. Batman/Catwoman: The Gotham War - Battle Lines #1 by Tini Howard, Chip Zdarsky, Mike Hawthorne, Adriano Di Benedetto, and Romulo Fajardo Jr. shows Bruce recovering from his fight against Insomnia, waking up in the Batacombs. Here, he is informed that the battle — and being possessed by Deadman — took its toll on him, leaving him unconscious for eight weeks.
When Bruce later asks himself what happened, he has a simple answer: "Time happened. Age happened." Although being possessed by Deadman during Knight Terrors contributed to his exhaustion, the thought of Batman being asleep for eight weeks straight would be unfathomable for the character at the height of his abilities.Batman Is Slowing Down, and Oracle Knows It As several Bat-Family allies have noticed, this isn't an isolated incident.
Batman feeling his age isn't coming without consequence: the Dark Knight has been making a number of critical mistakes in his latest adventures. When Bruce came up against the robotic Failsafe in recent issues of Batman, he was unable to defeat it, causing Batman's apparent death. But Bruce was actually sent to an alternate reality — where he lost a hand to an enemy in that universe's version of Gotham. Now, Batman finds himself in a fight against Catwoman in The Gotham War event.
Will Batman's Mistakes Cause His Downfall? Across several main continuity stories, it seems DC is committed to exploring a Batman who is finally feeling his age. This is no longer the youthful Batman from the "rebooted" New 52 era. Bruce's weariness may spell danger for the rest of the Bat-Family in the near future, as a mentally and physically weakened Bruce has repeatedly struggled to keep his Zur-En-Arrh personality at bay.
