“The kids competed really well,” Johnson coach Gordon Gesell said. “We needed to get a timely hit and we got one early, but we couldn’t get one there the next time to break the game open.” Cunningham came up to bat with two outs in the bottom of the third inning and smacked a solo home run over the right-field fence to give Johnson a 1-0 lead.
