The penalty for the pitcher taking too much time is an automatic ball added to the count. If the hitter isn’t ready, it’s an automatic strike.During spring training this season, the timer took an average of 25 minutes off games, according to a recent MLB memo.Bases will be three inches bigger this season – 18 inches square, up from 15 inches.The bigger bases are partly for player safety and will help reduce the odds of injury from a collision between a fielder and a runner.
