Ichiro Suzuki becomes the first Japanese player to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame, joining CC Sabathia and Billy Wagner in the esteemed class of 2024.
Ichiro Suzuki made history on Tuesday, becoming the first Japanese player inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Suzuki received 393 out of 394 votes from the Baseball Writers' Association of America, narrowly missing a unanimous election. He joins fellow inductees CC Sabathia and Billy Wagner, who were elected with 342 and 325 votes respectively.
This historic trio will be enshrined at Cooperstown on July 27th, alongside Dave Parker and Dick Allen, chosen last month by the Classic Era committee.Suzuki's remarkable career began in 2001 when he joined Major League Baseball at the age of 27. He made an immediate impact, achieving the feat of winning both the AL Rookie of the Year and AL MVP awards in the same season, a feat shared only with Fred Lynn, who accomplished it in 1975. Suzuki's dominance continued with two AL batting titles and ten All-Star selections, along with multiple Gold Glove awards. Over his illustrious career, he amassed a .311 average, 117 homers, 780 RBIs, and 509 stolen bases while playing for the Seattle Mariners, New York Yankees, and Miami Marlins. Renowned for his exceptional contact hitting, Ichiro boasts an impressive total of 4,367 hits, surpassing Pete Rose's MLB record of 4,256. This combined total includes 1,278 hits in Nippon Professional Baseball and 3,089 in MLB, including a record-breaking 262 hits in 2004. Joining Suzuki in the Hall of Fame are CC Sabathia, a six-time All-Star, 2007 AL Cy Young Award winner, and 2009 World Series champion, and Billy Wagner, a seven-time All-Star and renowned closer who ranks amongst the most effective relief pitchers in baseball history. Wagner's impressive career saw him record 422 saves with an exceptional 2.31 ERA over 15 seasons.
