Barry Corbin rebounds from oral cancer to do a one-man show tonight in Fort Worth

, 82, has lived an actor’s dream life, appearing and stealing scenes in hundreds of television shows and movies. The Fort Worth-based character actor with a distinctive Texas drawl and barrel chest recently rebounded from oral cancer and doesn’t seem to be slowing the least bit.An Evening with Barry Corbin

“I’ve been wanting to do this one-man show for a while,” Corbin said. “I thought I’d try it out there, and let [the theater] keep all the money. If it’s viable, I’ll just take it out on the road and not worry about Hollywood so much anymore.” Jeffrey Smith and his wife, Debbie Garrett-Smith, have worked since 2017 to restore the theater. Financial pressures stemming from the pandemic mean they’re laboring to keep its stage active.

“I [told the producers] I’ve got to go get some surgery,” he said. “They said, ‘Can you put it off until September?’ I said, ‘Well, cancer doesn’t wait on you.’"
