Barrett named Canada Basketball GM. MORE:
Canada Basketball announced on Tuesday that Rowan Barrett has been promoted to the role of the men's national team general manager.
Barrett, who played for the national team for over a decade including at the 2000 Summer Olympics, succeeds. The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famer is transitioning into a senior advisory role.
A swingman in his playing days out of St. John's, Barrett will also be in charge of developing analytics and a style of play for the team. “It is a tremendous honour to take on this role and help guide our national team to success on the international stage," Barrett said in a release. “Not only are we focused on the podium but also continuing to develop a culture of winning and sacrifice within our teams as we proudly represent Canada every time we step onto the court."
A native of Scarborough, Ont., Barrett spearheaded Canada's qualification for the FIBA Basketball World Cup with the team going 10-2 over the Americas Qualifiers and earning Canada its first spot in the tournament - set for China in late August - since 2010.
